How can golfers reduce the amount of putts they average on each round they play?
There is no magic formula but here are a few simple tips which may help. Remember that if you can cut 6 strokes off your average number of putts per round, you effectively cut your handicap by 6 in total.
For every putt of 4 feet and under use a short one inch backswing. Use a rap type stroke.
For every putt 20 feet and longer imagine you were putting at a 6 foot imaginary circle.
Start putting with a very short putter. Most pro shops have them in stock today.
Hold the putter with both hands on the shaft with the index fingers of both hands extended straight down the putter shaft to ensure there is no wrist break during the putting stroke.
Always have the ball positioned one inch forward of the left foot which should be pointing straight forward.
